History

A trust was set up in 1635 when Elize Hele left money to found a school in Exeter. The trust’s main influence in building schools in the city only really became active however in 1837.  Over the years since then the trust has been key in providing education in the city. The Hele’s School for boys was built at Bury Meadow near St David’s and remained there from 1850 until 1959.  The school moved to a new site at Southam Farm, Quarry Lane where, after an amalgamation with other schools in the area, it became Hele’s School. Exeter College took over the old Hele’s School site at St David’s. Bishop Blackall School merged with Hele’s School in 1983 and that school today is St Peter’s C of E School. The sale of the buildings from this reorganisation now take the form of a trust managed by representatives of Devon County Council and are used today to support children who attend Exeter Schools
